Loads of hard water

We went to a home yesterday that was suffering the wrath of extremely hard water. On a national average 10 grains of hard water is extreme hard water. We tested her water and she was at 15. What was the real killer was that we were called out to the home for a lack of hot water and found a leaky bottom element on her hot water heater. We decided to replace it and as i pulled it out the water heater was about 1/3 to 1/2 full of hard water scale. This not only inhibits the water from being heated properly but it cuts your hot water in half or more. To add to the list of bad things you could add the following: Increased water heating costs, Probably close to unhealthy amounts of calcium in their hot water, Hard water clogs in faucets and fixtures and Excess build up in pipe causing weak spots and more corrosion this also effects your hot water heater. The calcium will begin to pit the inside of your water tank and cause weak spots and rusting that will eventually lead to leaks and failure of the tank. The best way to fix this problem would be to install a water softener and a whole house water filter wouldn’t be a bad idea as well. This filter would catch everything the softener wouldn’t and would allow the water to enter the house as pure as possible. The second thing i would recommend would be to replace the water heater. By the time you get done messing around with cleaning the thing out you would have spent 100′s of dollars cleaning out a water heater that was on the down hill part of it’s life being 8 years old. The money there would be better spent in a replacement due to the age and the money they are probably spending in heating their water the would more then likely pay off a new heater in energy saved in a few months.
