Roots, Roots, Roots

Having problems with roots in  your drain line? Spring and fall are when we typically get a lot of business for cleaning main sewer lines. So i thought we would throw some information on what we can do to help you if you have problems with roots in your drain lines. There are a few things you should know when dealing with roots. 1st that once you cut them they grow back just like hair. 2nd they will grow through anything, Concrete, metal, plastic, you name it. 3rd if they grow through your pipe you have a break and that will cause more problems not only with roots but with the pipe breaking more. Once a crack develops and water starts to leak out of that pipe it will follow the pipe and moisten the ground causing the ground to soften and further crack the pipe. That allows 2 things to happen: one more roots grow through making the crack larger and two it causes other joints in the pipe to crack and break. Which could allow more water and roots to grow through. One thing i can make you a promise on and that is that if this happens you will have the best looking tree on the block! The con of that is that your going to be doing battle with roots till you decide to do something about it. There are a number of different ways you can deal with roots. The most common way to clean them out is by a mechanical cutter ,rooter machine, or Cable machine. There is something very important you need to pay attention to here. If you are trying to clean out a main line with a machine that has a smaller cable and head your only going to poke a hole through the problem. There are a few people who charge less and use smaller machines that cannot take care of your problem like a professional drain cleaner can. In essence you get what you pay for. If you want more frequent problems call the cheaper guy and have him come poke holes through the problem. We use a cable that has enough power to drive a 4 to 6” cutting blade through your pipe. This not only scrapes debris off your pipe but it will rip through the roots and leave you pipe pretty darn clean! I will attach a video of before and after of a job we did with what i just described. A guy was renting a rooter and poking holes through it and couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t taking care of the problem. After you cut those roots out you have only solved half of the problem. You basically gave them a hair cut. To some people that is just fine “i’ll see ya next  year”, they say. I would rather see them next year not when their basement is full of sewage and putting their family’s health at risk. We can treat the pipe with a great product called RootX. In essence this product foams up and coats the pipe with a sticky residue and dries on the pipe causing a barrier that if the roots try to grow through it attaches itself to them and dries the roots out and kills them. If you still have roots in your drain line RootX will attach itself to the roots and kill them by drying them out and they will just break off as water flows by. This will stay in your line up to a year if applied correctly. We offer warranties with your treatment especially if you are doing a cleaning with us. The other way to clean the roots out of the pipe is using a hydro jetter. This machine uses a spinning head that has cables or chains attached to the spinning part that are propelled by the high pressure water it produces. To remove the roots you need a big jetter and the right head. If you run this there needs to be some caution. It cleans well but it will also bore a hole right through your pipe if you have a break. Some claim to have a medium sized jetter that will cut root with out using chains or cables but they will only remove small roots. So it would be a good pick for the right application. If you want to see what jetting can do here is a link to a jetter that can and will clear roots http://www.usjetting.com/video_chain_flail.html it’s cutting a cement block but you will get the idea if this guy runs into a break in your pipe. say good bye to that section of piping! So if  you have problems with roots in your sewer or drain pipes it’s best to run a camera, check out the problem and then pick the method of cleaning that is going to be the best for what we are removing. We have had a lot of training about how to remove obstructions and debris from piping and can help you decide what option is going to be the best for you and your application. As the saying goes there is more then one way to skin a cat same applies to cleaning your pipes and a camera will be the best way to figure out how to clean them the best. If you want to pay the least amount of money you will get the most general clean that you may or may not have more problems with. You pay a little more and get a lot better clean and a guarantee. Pick  you poison but it’s better to pay more and not have to clean up sewage again in my book. If you would like to schedule an inspection or a cleaning mention this blog and i’ll take 20 bucks off you bill! Nortiz NR66 (531) Aqua Pure cws 150 and AP903 whole house filter

We had a lot of fun meeting and chatting with this guy! We sized out the system and what he needed and the NR66 fit his needs like a glove. We threw in the water softener to compliment the tankless to make his system as low maintenance as we could. We had some fun getting the termination to mount up  to the outside wall and still have the pitch we needed to keep the condensation from coming back into the unit. We added the AP903 to the house after the softener to filter for chlorine, taste, odor and sediment. If you or anyone you know are interested in getting a tankless water heater system give us a call or visit our site at www.bridgeplumbing.net

I’m hoping this customer will come comment on this page because he makes the coolest pine wood derby race tracks i have ever seen. I told him to put a picture and a link up to his site.

Robert just sent us some finished pictures of the room after we finished with our part. Here they are. He also makes custom pine wood derby tracks and if you ask nicely he might build something else for you! check out his stuff at

Noritz R98 DVC and Aqua pure CWS 150

This was a fun one! We probably had one of the more technical/ tricky installs to date. We had to run a new gas line from the meter in through a finished basement into a mechanical room. We had to move drains and water lines to get the venting out but the final product was great! We did some quick math to figure out what consumption the customer needed and decided that the Noritz R98 DVC would be a perfect match for their needs. Then we check the hard water and sized the softener and the Aqua Pure CWS 150 was a great match for their needs as well. The mechanical room was fun. We moved the water softener so that the main water shut off valves would be out of the way and then we installed the tankless on a wall out of the way of the rest of the mechanical room giving it more room and hopefully giving the customer more space for storage. After we thought we were done we ended up finding a few problems with the cold water back flowing into the hot lines. We would turn on a a few fixtures and depending on what one we turned on it effected other faucets in the house by turning the hot water cold and as soon as we turned that faucet off then the water would get hot again. After some diagnostics and a trip to the supply house we found a quick fix and they can enjoy endless hot water and a smaller gas bill.

The finished product

Aqua Pure CWS 150 water softener. The number on the screen is how many gallons it will do before it needs to regenerate

Broken water main

We responded to a call a week or so ago for a guy who had a leak on his water main between the meter and his house. Unfortunately the main went out of the back of his house and went across under his neighbors drive way and under the sidewalk to the city meter. We decided that pipe bursting would be the best idea here to help keep his damage and cost down on the job. We thought we would be able to get the burster cable through the pipe from the basement but soon found that whoever installed the water pipe decided that they wanted to put 2  elbows on the pipe just as it left the foundation wall. So we ended up digging two pits about 4 feet by 4 feet one by the house to remove the elbows and one by the water meter to pull the pipe from. We yanked to old water line out and pulled in a new 1” HDPE pipe water main and had the job all cleaned up and ready to go by the middle of the afternoon. So we replaced about 60 feet of water service pipe in a few hours and they didn’t have to replace their drive way or sidewalk. We will attach some pictures on here to show how well it cleaned up. The inspector came over to give us his blessing on the work clean up and he had a hard time figuring out where we dug the holes in the yard. If you have a leak in your water main don’t call an excavator that will dig your whole yard up, break your sprinklers and make a huge mess. We can come over and get the same job done in half the time and you don’t have to worry about replanting sod or cleaning up a huge mess. Contact us on www.bridgeplumbing.net or give us a call (435) 750-0880

Here is a shot at what we would have tore up to get this guy replaced with out the pipe burster

Here is a picture after we cleaned up by the water meter. If you look closely towards the top of the picture you can see the meter covers

Noritz 751M ( R98 )

We had this unit on our shelf for a while and made a screaming deal on it! The install was pretty slick. We did some repiping while we were at it and installed a water softener the home owner bought to have installed. Every thing went in like a charm and now they have endless hot water and an awesome product. We put in a new main water shut off valve and pressure reducing valve. We are going to throw a picture or 2 of it on here for you. If your interested in having tankless or are looking for a deal we have a few scratch and dent units come through every once and a while. Sewer back up

We responded to a flooded basement yesterday. They had sewage backing up through the floor drain in the basement. So we made the diagnosis of a clogged sewer main from the house to the street some where. We opted to run the sewer camera to see what was going on and where it was before we cleaned it. Well the house was only maybe 60-80 feet from the city sewer main and i pushed out 120ft of camera cable and didn’t hit anything. I went outside with my locator to find the end of the camera and figure out where the heck the camera was headed. We quickly found that i was in the city sewer. So we pulled the man hole down the street and sure enough the city sewer main was just about to start flooding peoples houses. We made a few calls to the city and got them out to take care of the problem. We don’t run into these very often but it sure made that job a lot easier running the camera first then if we would have been working on that main for an hr trying to clear something that wasn’t there! If your having a problem with your sewer main and need help we will respond any time of the day or night just give us a call at (435)750-0880 or contact us on our website at www.bridgeplumbing.net
